The will to grow into a better version of ourselves is something that we constantly aspire to achieve at Mossery. Today, we’ll be giving you a glimpse of what inspired our latest breakthrough—the Medium Threadbound Notebook. Our lead designer, Jun Lim, talks to us about the story behind this milestone.

Can you tell us a little bit about ‘Our Next Page’ and the story behind this campaign?

I’m the type of person who enjoys writing everything down in my notebook because I believe that it could bring growth to a person. So I’m constantly anticipating to make progress, be it for myself, the environment I’m working in, or the projects I’m taking on.

For example, I always take notes during meetings with people because I want to learn as much as I can from them—their passion, their strengths, their interests. By doing so, at the end of these conversations, I would have gained so much from them and grown into a slightly better version of myself.

This campaign applies the same concept—we want to facilitate change in everything that we do, and to me, every page in a notebook reflects the opportunity for a person to grow. Designing the Threadbound Notebook is filling in one of those pages for Mossery.

Mossery started as a stationery company that produced wirebound notebooks. What inspired the idea of creating notebooks in this new format?

Our community plays a huge role when it comes to making product-related decisions. Having built a tight-knit and honest community over the years, I’m incredibly thankful for different ones who took the time to talk to us about their thoughts and comments—especially left-handers—which was to have a book that was free from any restrictions for anyone to write or draw on.

To our left-handed users out there, this one’s for you!

In everything that we do, there will be obstacles. What motivated you to push through this monumental project?

Anything new will always be difficult when we start. There will be uncertainty and we will make mistakes. Take the production process for examplewe had to learn and understand it from square one as it is very different for the threadbound and the wirebound. But I believe there’s a simple and basic truth behind everything we know in this world. As long as we come to this realisation, it will help us to clarify our thoughts.

Think of it as a math equation. You need to understand the variables and constants to solve the equation. We’ve simply learned to place the correct values in the right places. All of our doubts or concerns are easily cleared away because we know at a fundamental level to recognise a solution that would work. From there, it would only be natural for us to take the next step forward.

What was the biggest challenge and how did you overcome it?

When we were designing the front section for the notebook, we were puzzled—we weren’t sure if the prompts we came up with would resonate with people in general. Thankfully, with a team full of notebook users, everyone’s diverse opinions and feedback really helped in making sure that we were headed in the right direction.

We explored together and came up with different ways to get the most value out of a notebook. I truly believe that the new front section we designed based on the team’s thoughts and ideas would help to enhance a person’s thinking process.

What are you most proud of for this entire launch?

I’m particularly proud of our community who still supports us to this day. I’m grateful to have people who resonate strongly with our values and believe that we’re building something that can help them in their daily lives.

What do you hope for people to take away when they’re using this notebook?

I hope they learn something about themselves and the world. I hope they can express their creativity in a little or big way. I hope they find their next big idea in our notebook and I hope they can create something because they made that sketch or scribbled something down.

In fact, this applies to all of our books—whether it’s a planner or a sketchbook, they carry the same spirit.  We shipped every book with the hope of it being able to bring a next big thing to anyone who uses it.

I’ve experienced it and I’m always anticipating the next big idea now. It will not be something easy but it’s something worth starting.
