As children, we were taught to tell things apart: this is mommy, and this is daddy; mommy is not daddy, and daddy is not mommy. Simultaneously, we were also taught how to group things that belong together.
As we grow up, all of this becomes ingrained in us. The sameness and differences become deeper, darker, both creating a starker contrast of the society we live in.
It becomes natural for us to look for those that are like us, averting our eyes from those that are not. We stop learning how to deal with differences because we find ourselves avoiding them altogether.
"We don't get harmony when everybody sings the same note." — Steve Goodier
So this June, we’re inviting you to come and celebrate the things that set us apart—our bodies, our voices, our cultures, our thoughts—to discover beauty in the messy, intricate, and genuine features of who we truly are.
This month, we’re celebrating differences. Join us on Instagram as we share different initiatives—whether it’s the Handwriting Challenge or an art prompt, everyone will have an opportunity to take joy in our most authentic selves.
